Gompas themselves are structures of stone, clay and timber. It is the community who take care and practice there bring it to life.

Shashi Dhoj Tulachan accepted responsibility for Chhairo gompa from the current tulku, who had chosen not to live the life of a monk. Community members of Chhairo and some residents from the neighbouring villages of Marpha and Chimang, whose families have used the gompa’s services in the past, continue to play a role in the life of the gompa, some were employed in the reconstruction works.

Restoration Works International with technical services from JSA supported the physical restoration of the gompa from 2005 to 2014. The various RWI team leaders became key members of the Chhairo community.

Sambha gompa is also the responsibility of Shashi Dhoj Tulachan and his brother, Cakra Dhoj Tulachan. Located in Tukuche village with it’s back to the highway, their nephew, Damcho Norbu is the current tulku of Sambha gompa.
